Cold calling has a reputation problem. For many small business owners, the thought of phoning strangers to pitch your services is uncomfortable, for good reason. Most people don’t enjoy being interrupted, and rejection rates are high. There are other ways to connect with potential business customers that are more effective, less stressful, and often more productive.

Tap into your network
Your existing contacts are your best starting point. Friends, family, ex-colleagues, suppliers, and customers may know someone who needs what you offer. Let them know you’re taking on new clients and be clear about the kind of businesses you want to work with. Personal introductions open more doors than cold calls can.

Go where your customers are
Find out which industry events, trade shows, and networking groups your target market attends. Being in the same room as potential customers makes it easier to strike up genuine conversations. You can often get involved as a speaker or panellist to showcase your expertise.

Use content to attract enquiries
Publishing helpful content: articles, guides, short videos, positions you as a trusted expert. When businesses see you solving problems in your content, they’re more likely to approach you for help. Post on LinkedIn, industry forums, and your own website.

Build partnerships
Collaborate with complementary businesses that share your audience but aren’t direct competitors. For example, a web designer might partner with a copywriter, or a catering company with an events venue. You can recommend each other and share leads.

Use LinkedIn strategically
LinkedIn can be a goldmine for B2B connections if used well. Follow target companies, engage with their posts, and share your own relevant updates. Direct messages work best when they’re personalised and value-driven and don’t just say: “Can we have a call?”

Follow up
If someone expresses interest, follow up promptly but politely. Provide useful information, answer questions, and keep in touch without being pushy. Build relationships. Relationships are vitally important, take time and effort to build and may eventually turn into sales.
